What Does a Medical Scribe Do?
A medical scribe is an important part of a medical team that can work in a variety of medical settings including hospitals and doctors offices. Medical Scribes function as a personal assistant to a physician, sometimes following them through their work day and charting their patient interactions in real time. Their primary responsibility is to take notes during patient visits and manage and maintain Electronic Health Records (EHR) so that physicians can focus on patient care.
EHRs significantly improve patient care, and allow a medical office to keep track of all important information from a patient’s visit, including prescriptions, vital signs, past medical history, and more. EHRs reduce the risk of medical error by providing physicians with more accurate and clear records.
What is the Job Outlook for Medical Scribes?
With the rise in popularity of EHRs, Medical Scribes are an emerging and quickly growing profession. According to Michael Murphy, MD, CEO of ScribeAmerica in an interview with Verywell: “Medical Scribes are going to be the standard in healthcare and will be part of the team: a physician, nurse, tech, and a Medical Scribe….as EMR, federal, and insurance regulations continue to impact physician productivity, the need for assisted documentation will grow.” On the job outlook for medical scribes, Murphy said “Medical Scribes should be in high demand as physicians are looking to streamline processes, become more efficient and less data entry specialists.”
