What Is Medical Assistants Recognition Week?
Medical Assistants Recognition Week (or MARWeek) was originally created by the American Association of Medical Assistants (AAMA) to celebrate the importance and contributions of Medical Assistants in the healthcare industry. MARWeek is designated as the third full week in October, with Wednesday being a special focused day of celebration.
The Growing Role of a Medical Assistant
A Medical Assistant is an integral member of a healthcare team. The role of a Medical Assistant can vary depending on the size and specialty of their workplace. They are expected to support the work of physicians and other health professionals, performing both clinical and administrative duties including:
- Assisting doctors in physical exams and minor surgeries.
- Taking patients’ vital signs, height and weight measurements.
- Updating patient electronic health records (EHR).
- Sterilizing medical instruments and sanitizing examination rooms.
- Performing EKGs and phlebotomy procedures.
- Other clinical procedures as required by the medical facility.
- A thorough understanding of Medical terminology, Anatomy and physiology, Medical law and ethics, and HIPAA regulations will be utilized throughout the Medical Assistant’s typical day.
- Front office procedures including answering phones and scheduling appointments.
As with many other jobs in the medical & dental fields, the job outlook for Medical Assistants continues to grow. According to the US Bureau of Labor Statistics, the demand for Medical Assistants is expected to grow 12% by 2034, which is much faster than the average job growth across other industries. There has never been a better time to become a Medical Assistant!
