What Does a Phlebotomist Do?
Phlebotomists take blood and collect samples for medical laboratories. The responsibilities of a phlebotomist include:
- Using specialized equipment in order to study blood samples and look for cell count, blood type, and other information.
- Logging information into medical records, including electronic health records.
- Using and maintaining medical equipment such as needles, blood vials, and test tubes.
- Properly labelling, storing, and processing blood samples.
- Keeping nervous patients calm and relaxed while giving blood.
What is the Job Outlook for Phlebotomists?
Phlebotomists typically make somewhere between $13.00 to $20.00 an hour. The pay typically depends on where they are working. Phlebotomists can work in a hospital, private clinic, doctor’s office, blood donor center, or diagnostic lab. The Bureau of Labor Statistics has stated that between 2016 and 2026 there is an expected 24% increase in job growth for phlebotomists, much higher than the average across all occupations.
