Medical Assistant with Phlebotomy, EKG and Patient Care Technician
Students in this program will learn the required skills to become an Allied Health Medical Assistant. Knowledge will be attained in Medical Terminology, Anatomy and Physiology, Medical Law and Ethics including HIPAA.
All students receive hands on clinical skills in phlebotomy, injections, EKGs, vital signs, as well as tasks of daily living and mobility assisting skills will be mastered in an on-site laboratory furnished with state-of-the-art medical equipment.
Navigation and utilization of Electronic Health Records as well as an overview of front office skills are included. This comprehensive career readiness program provides the student with the education necessary to become a Certified Clinical Medical Assistant, a Certified Phlebotomy Technician, a Certified EKG Technician, and a Certified Patient Care Technician through the National Healthcareer Association.

In this medical terminology course, we’ll cover medical terms related to all major body systems, including: muscular system, skeletal system, respiratory system, circulatory system, digestive system, reproductive system, and urinary system.
Anatomy and Physiology
Essential principles of human anatomy and physiology are presented, including basic chemistry, cell and tissue studies, and an overview of all the body systems, as well as study of the structure and function of the human body and mechanisms for maintaining homeostasis within it. This includes the study of cells, tissues, integumentary, skeletal, muscular and nervous systems, as well as the endocrine, respiratory, digestive, urinary and reproductive systems.
Also included is process for obtaining a patient history, assisting the physician with a physical exam, procedures for activities of daily living [ADL’s], Patient transfers, navigation and utilization of Electronic Health Records, and an overview of front office skills. This does include learning basic vital signs and anthropometric signs. This module also covers medical ethics and communication skills.
Phlebotomy module provides academic and clinical education for students to acquire the knowledge, skills, and attitudes necessary for becoming a specialist in obtaining blood specimens by venipuncture and micro techniques, for the purpose of laboratory analysis.
Knowledge of the healthcare system is taught, as well as the anatomy and physiology related to laboratory testing and phlebotomy, the collection and transport requirements for tests performed in all areas of the laboratory, documentation and patient records, and the interpersonal skills needed to provide quality and proficient patient care.
The course combines theory and practice, covering important background on the anatomy and physiology of the heart and chest, on heart disease and disease processes, flow of blood through systemic and pulmonary circulation, the conduction system, pertinent medical terminology, and the legal and ethical aspects of patient contact and safety.
There is also a practical and hands-on experience the students will receive by use and placement of the 12 lead EKG machine, and in reading and analyzing EKG printouts to determine ‘cardiac intervals and complexes’ and normal vs. abnormal readings. Students are expected to complete 10 EKG’s and identify 4 sets of waves, figure the heart rate using a 6 second strip as well as the 1500 box method, and determine what type of EKG is shown on the strip both abnormal and normal.
The course provides medical assistant student with lecture and hands-on skills regarding the protocols of patient care. Instruction in advanced clinical techniques provides the student with knowledge and skills in Pharmacology, as well as preparation and administration of medications. This course introduces the student to basic laboratory concepts and procedures used in a medical laboratory. Definition of the medical assistant’s role in assisting with clinical laboratory testing will be discussed.
Procedures covered include, but are not limited to phlebotomy, specimen collection, preparation of clinical laboratory specimens, performing basic laboratory testing, and reporting patient results of testing. Clinical application of skills is mandatory including successful venipuncture, EKG’s, and capillary sticks.
